From the Badge to the Vine
A Journey Through Duty, Trauma, and Healing
By retired U.S. Diplomat and Supervisory Special Agent K.L. Sadler
For years, I followed the rules. I upheld the law. I played my role in the system without questioning who built it – or why.
Until one day, I did.
What followed was not rebellion, but reckoning. A quiet, uncomfortable investigation into grief, fear, belief, and the stories I had inherited about justice, faith, and healing.
This book is the story of that investigation.

What This Book Is About
This is not really a book about psychedelics.
It is a book about what happens when the identity you built to survive no longer fits the person you are becoming.
For more than two decades, I served in law enforcement and federal service. I believed in duty, order, justice, and the systems I had sworn to uphold. But underneath the badge, I was carrying grief, trauma, anger, fear, and questions I did not yet know how to ask.
From the Badge to the Vine is a memoir about service, moral injury, faith, identity, healing, and the difficult work of telling the truth — especially when that truth complicates the story you once believed about yourself.
At its heart, this book is about awakening: to our wounds, to the stories we carry, and to the possibility of remembering who we were before the world told us who to be.

My path carried me from the structured world of law enforcement to the uncharted terrain of my own mind. This is not a trip report. It’s a reckoning—with myself, my past, and the stories I’d inherited about faith, justice, and truth. Through ayahuasca ceremonies, I confronted grief, regret, fear, and love—stripped down to the raw core of who I am. But the ceremonies were only the beginning.
The real work began afterward, when the medicine wore off and everyday life remained. In the months that followed, I came face to face with old patterns I could no longer ignore, wounds I had learned to armor over, and identities I had outgrown. What emerged wasn’t perfection—but clarity, humility, and a deeper sense of purpose.
This book doesn’t offer easy answers. It asks hard questions—the kind that invite us to reexamine what we’ve been taught, what we’ve protected, and what no longer serves us. It’s for seekers and skeptics alike. And for those who feel a quiet pull toward something more, even if they don’t yet know what to call it or where it may lead.
Because healing doesn’t end when the ceremony does. It begins in how we choose to live afterward.
